Rights Group Demands Releases of Activists in Emirati Al-Wathba Prison
A human rights center called for the release of detainees in Al-Wathba prison in Abu Dhabi, which has turned into a slaughterhouse used by UAE regime to kill prisoners of conscience and opponents.
The Emirates Center for Human Rights said that Al Wathba prison has no health care and the detainees’ lives are endangered as a result of neglect and failure to monitor their health.
The Center highlighted the fact that cells are overcrowded in Al Wathba prison, which causes the spread of diseases. These violations pass daily without accountability.
Human rights defenders and peaceful dissidents face severe reprisals for their activism, and are often subjected to arbitrary detention. Torture is also practiced systematically to obtain confessions, which are then used as the only evidence in trials that often end in harsh prison sentences.
A few days ago, the High Representative of Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in European Union, Josep Borrell, announced that the file of UAE’s violations of human rights would top its discussions with the Union next week.
Borrell said that the European Union will address issues of violations in UAE during the next round of human rights dialogue with UAE, scheduled for June 9.
It is noteworthy that the notorious Al Wathba prison in Abu Dhabi has turned into a slaughterhouse used by UAE regime to slowly and gradually kill prisoners of conscience and opponents.
