A report published on the website of the German radio and television network NDR on July 8 said that the crew of a German frigate feels great anxiety about being sent to the Red Sea to confront attacks by Sana’a forces because their frigate does not have a radar device, and therefore cannot track and respond to missiles, which makes it a “suicide” mission for the crew, according to the report.

The website of the German radio and television network NDR published a report in which it stated that “the frigate (Hamburg) left on a mission in the Red Sea, and it is said that important equipment is missing: a radar device through which the frigate can detect incoming missiles and repel them.”

“Many soldiers feel uncomfortable about this mission, and in a confidential conversation with an experienced Marine, bad words were mentioned about it such as it being a suicide mission,” the report stated.

The report quoted the soldier as saying, “The frigate (Hamburg), like other German frigates, lacks a special radar device on board that can be used to locate modern anti-ship missiles, which are weapons that the Yemeni “Houthis” in the Red Sea regularly use to attack cargo ships and the warships that protect them.

However, the frigate sailed from the port of Wilhelmshaven on Monday. The report quoted Marco Thiel, head of the Navy at the German Army Association, which looks after Marine Corps affairs, as saying, “German frigates are not equipped with special radar.”

Therefore, the frigate (Hamburg) alone will not be able to repel fast and descending missiles, or so-called anti-ship ballistic missiles, on its own.”

Thiele added, “The Federal Ministry of Defense decided in 2017/2018 not to update the technology on the frigates for cost reasons, and the threat situation was assessed at that time in a way that did not seem necessary, and basically, I would say it was a mistake.”

Thiel pointed out that the frigate will rely on other participating warships from other countries and have radar devices on board.

The report quoted a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Defense as saying: “Air defense, whether on land or at sea, is never an individual effort, but rather always occurs in a group and capabilities complement each other accordingly.”

According to the report, “It is clear that the mission in the Red Sea is a dangerous combat operation.”
