Downing of 22 MQ-9 Drones Exposes America’s Deepening Dilemma in Yemen

Brigadier General Mujib Shamsan, Military Expert: Yemen’s air defenses are continuously growing and evolving significantly despite the comprehensive blockade imposed by the American enemy. This progress stands as a testament to the assurances of Sayyid Abdul-Malik Badruldeen al-Houthi — may Allah protect him — who affirmed that every American escalation creates new opportunities for advancing Yemen’s military capabilities and aligning them with emerging challenges.
Major General Khaled Ghurab, Military Expert:
Yemen’s air defense forces have successfully developed three advanced missile systems designed to intercept hostile aircraft. Each employs a distinct targeting method—one of which is thermal, while the specifics of the other two remain classified at this time.

The downing of 22 U.S. MQ-9 drones by Yemeni air defenses has revealed a critical and growing dilemma for Washington in its ongoing aggression against Yemen. Despite its reliance on this advanced drone model in numerous warzones — including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and now Yemen — the United States faces unprecedented losses in the skies over Yemen. The MQ-9, often hailed by the Pentagon as the “Predator drone,” has met its most formidable challenge yet in Yemeni airspace.

The CIA has employed MQ-9s extensively to gather intelligence, monitor movements, and pinpoint military positions. In Yemen, this reliance has led to the sacrifice of dozens of MQ-9 units in the skies during the ongoing Battle of Promised Victory and the Sacred Jihad.

According to official data from Yemen’s Armed Forces, air defenses have downed nearly 22 American MQ-9 drones: four during operations countering the Saudi-Emirati aggression, and 18 during the recent military campaigns in support of Gaza — the highest number of this model downed in any war involving the U.S.

This continued American insistence on deploying MQ-9s in Yemeni airspace raises numerous questions: Why persist in using this technology despite the increasing likelihood of its destruction?

Intelligence Paralysis in Washington

Brigadier General Mujib Shamsan, an expert in military affairs, confirms that the American enemy is facing a significant intelligence shortfall when it comes to gathering information and identifying targets during its aggression against Yemen.

In an exclusive statement to Ansarollah’s media outlet, Shamsan explained that while the U.S. is well aware of the high risk and financial cost (up to $40 million per drone) associated with operating MQ-9s over Yemen, these drones remain its primary — and perhaps only — viable tool for intelligence collection and target acquisition.

Despite knowing that Yemen’s air defenses have evolved enough to intercept and destroy these drones, the U.S. continues to deploy them due to an overwhelming need for real-time battlefield information — essentially sacrificing drones for intelligence.

The repeated downing of MQ-9s, Shamsan adds, highlights the deep crisis and mounting pressure the U.S. military faces in its current confrontation with Yemen. This includes internal pressure within the U.S. due to the soaring costs of war without tangible results — a fact acknowledged by American media outlets.

He further noted that the losses have severely impacted the drone’s manufacturer, citing India’s decision to cancel a planned purchase of MQ-9 units. The Promised Victory and Sacred Jihad campaigns have thus directly undermined the reputation of America’s military technology.

In contrast, the success of Yemen’s air defenses in intercepting these drones reflects a significant leap in technological capability, neutralizing what was once considered one of the U.S. military’s most advanced unmanned aircraft.

Despite the U.S. blockade, Shamsan says, Yemen’s air defenses continue to grow, in line with Sayyid al-Houthi’s promise that every escalation by America paves the way for greater advancement in Yemen’s military readiness.

Strategic Resistance and Long-Term Attrition

Yemen’s Armed Forces are engaged in a prolonged strategic confrontation — The Promised Victory and Sacred Jihad Battle — against both American and Zionist enemies. Their approach centers on absorbing the U.S.’s aggression and gradually depleting its military strength.

According to Shamsan, this strategy of attrition is just the beginning. As American capabilities wear down, other tactical options will emerge to inflict further damage on U.S. forces.

Yemen’s Armed Forces have shown remarkable agility — simultaneously enforcing a ban on Zionist shipping, launching strikes deep into occupied territories, and confronting direct American aggression.

Shamsan underscores that the U.S. has exhausted nearly all its military options against Yemen and has faced humiliating failure in the face of Yemeni resistance. The continued battle, he says, will only compound America’s defeats and deepen its losses.

Rapid Steps Toward Full Airspace Defense

The repeated downing of MQ-9 drones also illustrates the impressive pace at which Yemen’s military power is advancing.

Major General Khaled Ghurab, a military affairs expert, confirms that Yemen’s air defense has developed sophisticated missile systems designed and built entirely by Yemeni engineers.

Speaking to Ansarollah’s outlet, Ghurab stated: “These advanced defense systems were created in direct response to hostile threats — particularly from the United States.”

He revealed that Yemen has produced three distinct types of air defense missile systems to intercept enemy aircraft. One uses thermal tracking, while the specifics of the other two remain classified at this time.

These systems — developed during the Promised Victory and Sacred Jihad— have secured three levels of aerial coverage:

Low-altitude air defense

Medium-altitude air defense

High-altitude air defense, reaching heights of 30,000 to 35,000 feet.

This layered defense has forced the U.S. military to rely more heavily on long-range strategic bombers like the B-52, stealth aircraft like the B-2, semi-stealth F-35 fighters, and other systems capable of attacking from high altitudes and long distances.

Ghurab emphasized that traditional fighters like the F-15 and F-16, as well as the armed MQ-9 reconnaissance drones — once the pride of American military engineering — are now obsolete in Yemen’s skies.

Yemen’s air defenses, he says, are striving — with Allah’s support — to reach the highest atmospheric layers, aiming for total and permanent protection of Yemeni airspace.

The war industries division, Ghurab notes, is working tirelessly to develop strategic, high-performance weapons capable of effectively confronting the American and Western arsenal in both defensive and offensive capacities.

Ongoing threats and challenges, he adds, only create more opportunities for expanding and refining Yemen’s military capabilities — which receive constant support and oversight from Sayyid Abdul-Malik Badruldeen al-Houthi, may Allah protect him.

American Failures Against the Great Yemeni People

The continued fall of MQ-9 drones in Yemen has exposed American confusion and a failing intelligence strategy. In response to its military setbacks, the U.S. has intensified indiscriminate airstrikes targeting residential neighborhoods and civilians.

Despite the rising number of civilian martyrs and wounded from these reckless American raids, the Yemeni people remain firmly committed to their faith-based and moral stance in solidarity with Gaza — a position that adds to the challenges facing Washington.

As American internal pressure mounts over the high cost of war — reports estimate nearly $1 billion spent in a single month of fighting — Yemen’s Armed Forces continue to enhance their military and defensive capabilities. These advancements further tip the scales in Yemen’s favor, reinforcing American failure and diminishing its image as a global military power.

Yemen’s growing military strength has become the greatest strategic challenge for both the Zionist enemy and its main ally, the United States.
