Sudanese Consider Pompeo’s Visit Hijacking of their Will
The arrival of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Khartoum stir popular anger. The Coordinator of the National Initiative for Change, Mohammad Hassab Rasul, told Al-Mayadeen that “the authority’s attitude in Sudan ignores principled issues. There were popular rejection and anger over his visit.”
large-scale campaigns considered the normalization attempts a “hijacking of the Sudanese people’s will.”
Sudanese Prime Minister, Abdullah Hamdok, told Pompeo that his government does not have the ability to take a decision on normalization with Israel. For his part, Rasul commented on Pompeo’s trip from occupied Palestine to Sudan, saying, “What has been done now violates Sudanese law and the Sudanese conscience that support the Palestinian cause.”
Rasul added to Al-Mayadeen that “the authority’s attitude in Sudan ignores the principled issues,” noting that this government and the existing authority “plays a functional role and is not able to express what contradicts the American and Zionist trends.”
Earlier today, the US Secretary of State traveled to Sudan on the first official direct flight from Tel Aviv to Khartoum.
Pompeo posted a tweet, saying, “I am pleased to announce that I am on board of the first official direct flight from Israel to Sudan.”
Israeli media reported on Monday “the planned itinerary of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who landed in Israel has changed historically.” It added, Pompeo would fly directly from Israel to Sudan to push the negotiations forward between Israel and different countries, expecting that he will visit Sudan, Oman, and Emirates.
Sudan News Agency reported last Wednesday that Sudanese authorities issued a decision to exempt the foreign ministry spokesman, Haidar Badawi Sadiq, from his position, after statements in which he revealed contacts between his country and Israel.
Sadiq told Reuters “The UAE’s move is a courageous and bold step and contributes to putting the Arab world on the right track to build peace in the region.”
