Human Rights in Saudi Arabia Is Horrific

American political science professor, Anil Shilin, described the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia as horrific and still extremely worrying. Sheilin enumerated the crimes of the actual ruler of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, such as the war crimes on Yemen and the brutal assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi
. In addition to the kidnapping of the Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, and the arrest of opponents and human rights activists inside the Kingdom, as well as the prosecution of opponents outside the borders of the Kingdom.

Sheilin warned of the legal danger of the human rights activist Loujain Al-Hathloul, as she remains at risk of legal prosecution, and many hundreds of people will remain unjustly imprisoned. She drew attention to Sheikh Salman Al-Awda, the Saudi cleric who represents a more progressive stance towards Islam in many respects compared to the Saudi institutions themselves.

The Middle East researcher said that it is alarming that the Saudi government claims that it is promoting so-called “moderate Islam, while one of the old clerics who encouraged the re-evaluation of some assumptions about conservative interpretations of Islam has been in prison, and has been suffering from a lack of medical care in solitary confinement, since the fall of 2017.” She concluded that the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia is generally dire.

The Biden administration had announced that it would publish information related to this matter, and this issue remains in the minds of many Americans when they think of Saudi Arabia.

In addition to the Kingdom’s role in the events of 9/11, and the fact that most of the hijackers at the time were Saudi citizens. Saudi Arabia is still seen by many Americans as a sponsor of terror and brutal violence.

Women’s rights:

The American political science professor criticized the absence of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, as the guardianship system has not changed, and women have remained vulnerable to abuse under this system.

Most importantly, she said, Mohammed bin Salman should stop oppressing and imprisoning Saudi people, in addition to killing people outside his borders. Therefore, for many Saudis, the real thing they want will be more economic opportunity, without spending resources on things like the war in Yemen.

She added that this war is depleting a tremendous amount of the kingdom’s resources, while it could have been spent more effectively on the Saudi population, which is similar to what is happening in the United States.

The American scholar concluded by saying: “I think that the Biden administration will quickly lose any credibility it might have if it continues in the arms trade operations to support these tyrannical regimes, even if they speak up on human rights.
