Drone attack targets Erbil international airport in Iraq

The Counter Terrorism Service in the Kurdistan Region, northern Iraq announced that the airport in the northern city of Erbil was hit by an explosives-laden drone, following which air services were suspended in the sky.

Erbil International Airport was attacked with by an explosives-laden drone, the agency said in a statement.

“At around 11:15 p.m. local time in Iraq, a drone crashed near Erbil Air Base, at which time initial reports indicate no casualties or damage were reported,” said The spokesman for the International Coalition, Colonel Wayne Maroto

A village just three kilometers from the new US consulate site in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, was attacked by drones in June.

Last April, Erbil airport was attacked, targeting headquarters of international coalition forces there.

In February, the Washington-led coalition acknowledged the death of a contractor and the wounding of five others, as well as a US soldier, in the shelling of Erbil airport and Hariri base in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
