Human Rights Council gives coalition green light to continue killing, destruction in Yemen
“Mwatana” Organization for Human Rights on Thursday considered that the vote of the member states of the Human Rights Council against renewing the mission of international experts group a continuation of the campaign of death and destruction in Yemen.
“By voting against the renewal of the Experts Group mission, the member states of the Human Rights Council have given the green light to the warring parties to continue their campaign of death and destruction in Yemen.”
The 47-member council voted, 21 countries objected to the draft resolution submitted by the Netherlands, 18 supported, 7 abstained, and Ukraine was absent.
The vote against renewing the mandate of the Experts Group comes after Saudi Arabia and its partners in the war on Yemen intensified pressure on members of the Human Rights Council to end the mandate of the Group.
On Wednesday, Amnesty International described the failure to renew the mandate of the Group of Experts as a betrayal by the international community of the Yemeni people.
Human Rights Watch Organization revealed On Wednesday an ongoing political pressure campaign from Saudi Arabia to discourage member states of the Human Rights Council from renewing the mandate of the Group of Experts on Yemen.
The organization stressed that not renewing the mandate of the Group of Experts at this stage would be “a disastrous step.”
