The International Organization for Migration announced today, Monday, that at least 28 Ethiopian migrants are missing after a boat crashed and sank on October 30 off the coast of Yemen.
The United Nations said, in a statement, that it “has verified that the Yemeni coast guard has recovered three bodies so far and is continuing to search for the remaining migrants.”
It explained, “According to witnesses, the boat left the city of Obock in Djibouti in the middle of the night to cross Bab al-Mandab Strait heading to a known arrival point in Yemen, with at least 30 people on board.”
It added, “The overcrowded boat, could not stand the high tide, avoided the rocks, and eventually sank.”
It pointed out that more than 54,000 migrants have traveled on the eastern corridor route that extends from the Horn of Africa to the Gulf states since the beginning of 2022.
It stated that this latest tragedy highlights the brutal conditions facing migrants on this corridor.
