With a majority of 143 countries, the United Nations adopts a resolution supporting Palestine’s request for full membership

The United Nations General Assembly, at its tenth special session, today, Friday, voted in favor of a draft resolution that supports Palestine’s application for full membership in the United Nations, recommends that the UN Security Council reconsider the application, and identifies ways to implement additional rights and privileges related to Palestine’s participation in the United Nations.
143 Countries voted in favor of the resolution, 9 opposed it, and 25 countries abstained from voting, according to the UN website.
The resolution, submitted by the Arab Group and a number of other countries, affirmed that the State of Palestine qualifies for membership in the United Nations, in accordance with Article 4 of the United Nations Charter, and “should therefore be accepted as a member” of the organization.
The resolution also recommended that the UN Security Council positively reconsider this issue.
According to the resolution, the General Assembly decides, on an exceptional basis and without this setting a precedent, to adopt several methods related to the participation of the State of Palestine in the sessions and work of the General Assembly and the international conferences held under its auspices and other United Nations organs.
The resolution reaffirmed “the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including having their own independent state, which is Palestine.”
The resolution, which was co-sponsored by nearly 80 member states, expressed “deep regret and concern” regarding the United States’ use of its veto in the United Nations Security Council on April 18.
The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas welcomed the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of a resolution recommending that the UN Security Council positively reconsider Palestine’s membership, stressing that this resolution is an acknowledgment of the need for the Palestinian people to obtain their legitimate rights in the face of the American will in support of the war of extermination being waged against them.
It called on the free countries of the world to intensify their efforts and provide all means of assistance and support to our Palestinian people.It also called on the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities and take a decision to recognize the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.
