A group of professors at Princeton University announced on Saturday morning that they will go on a 24-hour hunger strike in solidarity with their students who have been on hunger strike for 5 days as part of their solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip.

This announcement comes after students at the university located in New Jersey escalated their protest steps, announcing a hunger strike, at the beginning of this month, until the university meets their demands, which range from disclosing investments with the occupying entity, as well as withdrawing them, all the way to full academic and culture boycott.

The students said that they “derive this step from Palestinian political prisoners, who have been on hunger strike in Israeli prisons since 1968.”

They explained that their hunger strike “symbolizes their firm commitment to justice and solidarity,” despite its small size, compared to the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people.

A study monitoring political violence and political protests around the world, published by the British newspaper The Guardian, showed that 97% of the demonstrations that took place in American universities since mid-April were “peaceful.”

Acled Foundation, an independent, non-profit organization specializing in collecting and analyzing detailed conflict data, and founded in Britain, said that after analyzing

553 demonstrations on American universities, across the country, between April 18 and May 3, it was found that only less than 20 of these demonstrations resulted in serious personal violence or property damage.

During the same period, the project documented at least 70 cases of forceful police intervention against protests on American campuses, including arrests of demonstrators and the use of physical dispersal tactics, including chemicals, batons, and other types of physical force.

The foundation noted that “about half of the campus protests that Acled classified as violent involved demonstrators clashing with lawenforcement during police intervention.”
