The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor called for the dismissal of the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture from her position, for not taking any position regarding the violations that Palestinian prisoners and detainees are subjected to in Israeli prisons.
The Observatory said in a memorandum submitted to the office of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, today, Thursday: The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture (Alice Gill Edwards) did not fulfill her duties regarding the brutal crimes that Palestinian prisoners and detainees are subjected to in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which amount to war crimes.
The Observatory stressed the need for effective international intervention to end Israeli torture crimes against Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor confirmed that the Israeli enemy commits crimes of torture and other serious violations inside its prisons in a systematic and widespread manner against Palestinian prisoners and detainees, especially against Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip.
It pointed out that the ban on these crimes, especially torture and the punishment of perpetrators, is considered an international obligation incumbent upon all states without exception, as it is one of the mandatory customary rules of international law that prohibit torture under any circumstances.
It continued, “Despite the increasing evidence of the commission of these crimes by “Israel” and their succession, the international community remains silent about them in a way that ensures the Israeli occupation continues to commit them and protects their perpetrators.”
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor explained that the latest of this evidence was the report issued in early August by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on cases of detention from October 7, 2023 until June 30.
It pointed out that the UN report confirmed that “Israel” has committed serious violations in the context of arrests since the beginning of the genocide in the Gaza Strip, including violations of the right to life, liberty, and freedom from torture and other ill-treatment.
The UN report documented a number of cases of rape, sexual violence, and threats of it practiced by members of the enemy army and Israeli security forces against detainees, including men and women.
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor previously documented in a report issued about two months ago testimonies of about 100 released Palestinian detainees, showing that the Israeli enemy committed horrific crimes of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture inside its prisons.
The report confirmed that the Israeli enemy’s claim to conduct local investigations into violations against prisoners “is part of its attempts to block the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court under the pretext of the lack of complementarity, although these investigations have proven to lack seriousness, as is evident from the speed of the release of the accused.”
It added that “the world can no longer turn a blind eye to the crimes of torture, rape, sexual violence and inhumane treatment committed by the Israeli enemy, otherwise these countries will have failed to implement their international obligations or may be complicit and partners with the Israeli occupation.
The Euro-Mediterranean called for activating real pressure and influence tools to force the Israeli enemy to stop committing crimes against Palestinian prisoners and detainees, and to pressure it to comply with the rules of international law.
