The UN Security Council failed, on Wednesday evening, to adopt a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The draft resolution received the support of 14 members of the 15-member council, but it was not adopted due to the United States using its veto.

The draft resolution calls on all parties to abide by their responsibilities under international law “regarding persons in their custody” and to provide basic services and humanitarian assistance to the residents of Gaza, in addition to the parties’ commitment to international law and international humanitarian law, especially with regard to the protection of civilians and their civilian property.

It also calls on the parties to implement international resolution No. 2735 and stresses that “UNRWA remains the backbone of the humanitarian response in Gaza.”
