The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the occupied Palestinian territory said that the Israeli enemy has erected a total of 849 obstacles throughout the occupied West Bank.

The office explained in a survey conducted in January and February of last year that road gates constitute a third of these obstacles (288 gates), and most of them are often closed.

It added, “Currently, there are 849 obstacles that control, restrict, and monitor the ability of Palestinians to move, either permanently or intermittently, in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem and the Israeli-controlled area of Hebron.”

The survey concluded that the occupation has erected 36 new obstacles to movement during the past three months, most of them following the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza in mid-January.

It explained that this has further hindered Palestinians’ access to essential services and places of work.

It continued, “A total of 29 new gates have been installed throughout the West Bank, either as separate new closure gates or added to existing subsidiary checkpoints.”

It pointed out that this brings the total number of open or closed road gates across the West Bank to 288, constituting one-third of the movement obstacles.

It stated that approximately 60% of these gates (172 out of 288) are frequently closed.

It said, “In addition to the increase in the number of installed obstacles, the intensification of movement restrictions has led to prolonged disruptions at checkpoints, the intermittent closure of key access points connecting population centers throughout the West Bank, and an increase in the number of obstacles that are frequently closed.”

It pointed out that the documented obstacles included 94 checkpoints staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 153 partial checkpoints staffed intermittently, including 45 checkpoints whose gates are frequently closed.

It added that there were 205 road gates, 127 of which were frequently closed, 101 linear barriers (such as earth walls and trenches), 180 earth mounds, and 116 roadblocks.

It explained that “this data does not include checkpoints erected along the Green Line or other restrictions, such as the closure of Jenin Camp to returning residents or the designation of certain areas as “closed military zones.” These restrictions may not always include physical barriers on the ground.”

The report also addressed the Israeli occupation’s aggression on the northern West Bank governorates, which has entered its ninth week.

It noted that more than 600 housing units in Jenin are now uninhabitable, while 66 residential buildings are at imminent risk of demolition.

It stated that the aggression has caused extensive damage to water, sanitation, and road infrastructure, disrupting essential services and raising public health concerns.
