Around 50 people were killed and injured in a fire that broke out overnight in a mall in the city of Kut, the capital of Wasit Governorate in eastern Iraq, according to local authorities.
Al-Mayahhi declared a three-day period of public mourning in Wasit, noting that "the relevant authorities are continuing to investigate the causes of the fire, and initial results will be announced within 48 hours."
The governor confirmed that local authorities have initiated legal action against the building owner and the mall owner in connection with the incident, stressing that "there will be no leniency in holding accountable those responsible for negligence or dereliction of duty."
According to an AFP correspondent in Kut, the fire broke out on the first floor of a six-story building before quickly spreading to the upper floors.
