Nearly 60 British MPs yesterday called for a comprehensive ban on arms exports to "Israel, and for the government to be more transparent about the licenses it grants for military exports.
These demands come in a letter dated July 18, addressed to Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, at a time when Lammy warned Israel of further sanctions if a ceasefire in Gaza is not reached.
Labour MP Steve Witherden, who organized the letter, said: "Fifteen percent of the components of the fighter jets used by Israel to destroy Gaza are British-made. We cannot cover that up." He added: "Without British arms export licenses, these planes would not have flown and would not have dropped their bombs."
MPs requested clarification on data on UK arms exports to "Israel" in 2024, released by the Export Joint Controls Unit (ECJU), a government body that oversees export licenses for military and dual-use goods.
Trade Secretary Douglas Alexander stated during the debate that the majority of the licenses, £142 million in 2024, were for components to be re-exported to third countries, including NATO allies.
However, the letter pointed out that Export Control Unit data shows that more than half of the £141.6 million in standard individual licenses appears to be for direct use in Israel. It asked, "Can the government explain how this data reconciles with the Minister's claim that the majority of these licenses were for re-export?"
Alexander also pointed out that around £120 million, or 85% of the total value of licenses last year, were for components used in military exports from Israeli companies under a program for a NATO ally.
The MPs asked for clarification of the ally's identity, the name and nature of the program, and its date of inception, along with an explanation for the significant increase in individual licenses, which amounted to £127.6 million, and focused on radar and targeting systems, issued between October and December 2024, despite the new Labour government announcing the suspension of around 30 arms export licenses to Israel.
Weatherden said the government's repeated demands for greater transparency "have not yet been met," adding, "The least we can do is be completely honest about what we are sending to a state engaged in the indiscriminate massacre of civilians."
With American and European support, the Zionist enemy has been committing a genocidal crime and imposing a total blockade on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. This has resulted in more than 199,000 Palestinian deaths and injuries, most of them children and women, in addition to more than 11,000 missing persons, and hundreds of thousands displaced.
