A senior American diplomat defended the Israeli aggression against Qatar, a US ally, saying that Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, only cares about the interests of the occupying entity and will “go anywhere and do anything.”
Tom Barrack, the United States ambassador to Turkey and the special envoy for Syria, made the remarks in response to a question about the recent Israeli aggression against Doha, which targeted leaders of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.
“In general, after October 7, everything has changed in the Middle East,” Barrack said in reference to the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, which was conducted by the Palestinian resistance against the Zionist entity in October 2023 in response to the regime's decades-long campaign of death and devastation against the Palestinians.
“Bibi Netanyahu will tell you he’s not concerned about borders,” the US envoy said in an interview with The National.
“If he feels that his borders or his people are being threatened, he will go anywhere and do anything, full stop,” he added.
Israel launched airstrikes on Hamas headquarters in Doha in what was described as an “assassination operation,” killing several members of the Palestinian resistance movement and a Qatari security officer. However, the group’s top leadership, including Khalil al-Hayya, Khaled Meshal, and Zaher Jabarin, survived the attack.
Israeli officials confirmed that Netanyahu informed US President Donald Trump shortly before the strike that Israel planned to attack Qatar, a key mediator in Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks amid Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Barrack claimed that he does not agree “with a lot of things” the Israelis do, but he respects them, “because they tell you exactly what’s going to happen.”
He confirmed that Qatar was attacked, noting that Washington had previously requested the country to host Hamas and Taliban officials.
The attack raised fresh concerns among Persian Gulf Arab nations about their security, as Israel’s strikes have devastated Gaza and extended to Iran, Lebanon, Qatar, Syria, and Yemen.
