The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution urging "Israel" to cooperate with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), with overwhelming support from 139 member states.
Global majority supports UNRWA despite pressure
The vote took place on Friday at the UN headquarters in New York City. According to Israeli newspaper Maariv, only 12 countries opposed the resolution, while 19 abstained. Among those voting against was Bolivia, which recently resumed relations with "Israel" during a ceremony in Washington. This marked the first time Bolivia has voted in alignment with "Israel" against UNRWA.
The vote comes amid ongoing international debate over the future of UNRWA, particularly following recent reports that the administration of US President Donald Trump is considering sanctions against the agency, citing alleged links to terrorism.
"Israel" rejects UN vote, attacks UNRWA
In response to the UN resolution, "Israel’s" ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, dismissed the decision, accusing UNRWA of supporting terrorism.
"No decision will change Israel's position. UNRWA is an organization that supports terrorism, and its employees have participated in kidnapping, killing, and hiding terrorists. We salute the countries that are working to expose the infiltration of terrorism into this corrupt organization. Israel will not cooperate with an organization that works against it," Danon said, as quoted by Maariv.
Despite these accusations, UNRWA continues to serve millions of Palestinian refugees across the region, including in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan, providing education, healthcare, and humanitarian support.
