The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) stated that it has been facing a coordinated media disinformation campaign for more than two years aimed at dismantling the agency, stressing that “this campaign has reached unprecedented levels.”
In a post published on the social media platform X, UNRWA explained that one of the most prominent myths circulated as part of this campaign is the claim that the agency keeps Palestinian refugees in a permanent state of displacement.
The agency emphasized that Palestinian refugees, like refugees worldwide, remain refugees in the absence of just and lasting political solutions to their cause, stressing that dismantling UNRWA “will not lead to ending refugee status for Palestinians unless the root of the problem is addressed politically.”
UNRWA warned that the poorest segments among Palestinian refugees would be the most affected, particularly residents of refugee camps who rely heavily on the agency’s services in education and healthcare.
It added that the continued spread of disinformation not only distorts facts but also causes direct harm to one of the most vulnerable populations in the Middle East.
The agency concluded by stressing that the real alternative to addressing the refugee issue lies in serious investment in peace and in building capable and qualified future Palestinian institutions.
Over the past two years, the Zionist enemy “army” has targeted several UNRWA headquarters and facilities in the Gaza Strip, including schools and health centers that had been converted into shelters for displaced persons.
In 2024, the Zionist "Knesset" passed legislation banning UNRWA’s operations, before the Zionist entity formally notified the United Nations of the cancellation of the agreement regulating its relationship with the agency since 1967.
Following that decision, the Zionist enemy intensified its targeting of UNRWA’s main headquarters in occupied Al-Aqsa, where its forces stormed the building by force two weeks ago, seized its property, and replaced the United Nations flag with the Israeli flag, according to data provided by the agency.
The Zionist enemy has also obstructed and restricted UNRWA’s activities in the Gaza Strip and impeded the entry of its humanitarian aid into the enclave.
According to Palestinian sources over previous years, even prior to the genocidal war, the Zionist enemy had been leading a systematic campaign to smear UNRWA’s image and reduce its funding, paving the way for terminating its services and dismantling the agency.
Since 7 October 2023, the Zionist enemy—with American and European support—has continued to commit genocide in the Gaza Strip, including killing, starvation, destruction, displacement, and arrests, while ignoring international appeals and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt these crimes.
This genocide has resulted in more than 241,000 Palestinians killed or wounded, most of them children and women, in addition to over 11,000 missing persons, hundreds of thousands of displaced people, and famine that has claimed many lives—mostly children—along with widespread destruction that has erased most cities and areas of the Gaza Strip from the map.
