Migration and Displacement Minister Ivan Faiq Jabro likewise voiced firm opposition to any statements or positions promoting normalization with what she described as the “Zionist entity,” emphasizing that such views do not reflect the Iraqi people. She reaffirmed Iraq’s continued support for the Palestinian cause and its rejection of occupation and aggression.

In response to the backlash, the Chaldean Patriarchate issued a clarification saying the remarks referred to “normalization with Iraq, not with any other country,” explaining that the call was meant to encourage international openness and tourism, not relations with Israel.

The debate unfolded within a strict legal framework: Iraq passed a law in 2022 criminalizing normalization with Israel, imposing penalties that can reach life imprisonment or the death sentence for establishing political, economic, or cultural ties with Israel, reflecting broad official and popular consensus that normalization remains a national red line.
