The identities of nations are shaped through their history, values, and positions. The faith-based identity carried by the Yemeni people represents a unique model that combines historical authenticity, civilizational continuity, and principled stances. What Yemen is witnessing today in terms of heroic positions in support of Palestine and in defense of holy sites is a living expression of a deeply rooted identity formed over centuries. Its first defining milestone was embodied in the historic “Friday of Rajab,” when Yemenis embraced Islam voluntarily, without the use of a sword. This day has remained a turning point in Yemeni consciousness and a starting point for a faith-based path grounded in steadfastness and resilience in the face of challenges.
From the Friday of Rajab to the arenas of confrontation, the Yemeni people continue to carry the banner of faith and wisdom, embodying the saying of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family: “Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni.” This identity is not merely a memory of the past, but a project for the present and the future—a driving force that enables Yemenis to withstand challenges, remain firm in their principles, and contribute to supporting truth wherever it may be found. Just as their ancestors entered the religion of Allah in multitudes, their descendants continue along the same path, carrying the message of faith, striving for the dignity of the Ummah, standing firm against tyranny, and believing that Allah grants victory to those who support His cause.
Friday of Rajab: The Greatest of Yemeni Celebrations
The Friday of Rajab holds a special character for Yemenis. For the Yemeni people, it represents a great day that generations have been raised to revere and honor. On this occasion, Yemenis wear new clothes, exchange greetings and congratulations, distribute sweets, and visit relatives and friends. This was affirmed by Dr. Issam Hussein Al-Abid, Head of the Teachers’ Syndicate, who explained that the Yemeni people take pride in this occasion and consider it the greatest of their festivals.
On this day, Imam Ali, peace be upon him, stood in Suq Al-Halqah in Old Sana’a and addressed the Yemeni people, who embraced Islam at his hands. As a result, this occasion marked a decisive transformation, as the Yemeni people moved from disbelief to faith, and from darkness to light and guidance. Accordingly, this day is regarded as the festival of festivals, cherished by the Yemeni people and associated with a deep sense of joy.
Regarding the emotional bond of the Yemeni people to this occasion, their adherence to their faith-based identity, and the impact of this on younger generations, Dr. Al-Abid noted that this commemoration has shaped the awareness of children and students, strengthening their connection to their faith-based identity. This is clearly reflected in student activities during the commemoration, as students have grown remarkably in awareness, with each one becoming a school from which others learn.
During these days, students in schools organize various activities that reflect the qualitative transformation produced by adherence to the faith-based identity. It can be said that this attachment has created a major shift among younger generations and at the administrative level, as well as across various fields, including the military sphere. The faith-based identity has elevated the Yemeni people to a high level of awareness and responsibility under the leadership of the great leader, Sayyed Abdul-Malik Badruldeen al-Houthi, who consistently emphasizes in his speeches the importance of adhering to the faith-based identity as a pivotal point of transformation in all aspects.
Multitudes of Victory
The Yemeni people possess numerous and diverse virtues, testified to by the Qur’an and the Noble Prophet, documented by history, and proven in the battles of the present. Allama Muhammad Muftah, Acting Chairman of Al-Zawraa, stated in an exclusive interview with the Ansarollah website that Surah Al-Nasr, in which Allah Almighty says: “When the help of Allah and victory come, and you see people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes,” was revealed in connection with the Islam of the people of Yemen.
He explained that after the revelation of this verse, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, went out to receive the large delegation of Yemen, composed of its kings, dignitaries, and leaders, and said: “The people of Yemen have come to you; faith is Yemeni and wisdom is Yemeni.” Muftah added that the “people” referred to by Allah in the verse—“and you see people entering the religion of God in multitudes”—are the Yemenis themselves, who entered the religion of Allah in multitudes and are the ones intended.
Muftah further stated that from this perspective, the Yemeni people commemorate the Friday of Rajab as an act of gratitude and praise for this divine honor, and as a reminder of this blessing to successive generations. He emphasized that commemorating the faith-based identity falls within fulfilling the duty of thanking and praising Allah for the divine guidance, care, and honor bestowed upon the Yemeni people.
He noted that when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, received the delegation of Yemen, he gave glad tidings to his companions and prostrated to Allah, and that this prostration was for something momentous—the Islam of the people of Yemen. Reality, he said, has proven that the Yemeni people are exactly as the Prophet described them, endowed with faith and wisdom. This immense blessing and great honor thus deserve gratitude, praise, and acknowledgment, which the people of Yemen practice from the highest levels of leadership.
Muftah affirmed that amid the ongoing conflict between truth and falsehood, and between the forces of corruption and global misguidance represented by world Zionism led by the US administration and its allied Arab collaborators, the Yemeni people have made the faith-based identity their rallying standard and great banner, around which the people of faith unite to confront the evils of the world in this era.
A Station for Renewing Practical Allegiance
For the Yemeni people, the Friday of Rajab is not a passing memory confined to routine ceremonies. Rather, they regard it as a station for renewing allegiance to Allah, His Messenger, and the Prophet’s household. It is a moment to recall the magnitude of Allah’s favor upon them, to reinforce authentic Islamic principles, and to disavow alien cultures through which enemies attempt to distort the tolerant teachings of Islam.
In this context, cultural activist Hassan Al-Sharif explained that the Friday of Rajab represents the greatest of festivals for Yemenis, as it marks the anniversary of their entry into Islam through the call of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, who sent his envoy and successor, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, peace be upon him. When Imam Ali arrived in Yemen and invited the people to Islam, they responded and entered the religion of Allah in multitudes. When this reached the Messenger of Allah, he prostrated to Allah in gratitude and then said after his prostration: “Peace be upon Hamdan, peace be upon Hamdan, peace be upon Hamdan.”
Al-Sharif stressed that this day is regarded by Yemenis as a great historical occasion, in which they remember the entry of their forefathers into Islam, the religion with which Allah honored them, delivering them from misguidance and darkness into the light of Islam, dignity, honor, glory, and elevation.
He added that Yemenis today renew the legacy of their early ancestors who embraced Islam at the hands of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, and moved forward with him. Through their faith and connection to the Messenger of Allah and his household, they renew their allegiance in the field, in word and deed. They confront injustice and face tyrants and arrogant powers on earth, embedding the values of faith in both speech and action.
According to Al-Sharif, free people around the world draw inspiration from Yemenis, viewing them with admiration, respect, and reverence, and learning from them these great values that stem from the heart of Islam and the essence of pure, authentic Islamic faith. Today, Yemenis stand at the forefront of Islamic peoples, with no comparison to any other nation, due to their values, ethics, and the distinction granted to them by the Prophet’s saying: “Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni.”
Deeply Rooted Faith
What the Yemeni people have written—and continue to write—throughout history and in the present era of honorable stances is the product of a system of values, principles, and noble ethics passed down from generation to generation, guiding their confrontation with tyranny in every age.
Cultural activist Hussein Al-Aboud explained that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: “Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni,” he immortalized within Yemen and its people intrinsic qualities of faith that propelled them toward belief in Allah and His Messenger. This collective movement on the Friday of Rajab was so significant that it led the Prophet to prostrate in gratitude to Allah, eternally commemorating the Yemeni stance.
Al-Aboud pointed out that the faith-based qualities possessed by Yemenis were a divine preparation enabling this nation to produce those who carry Allah’s message and convey it to the world. From this standpoint, Yemenis were the pioneers and the bearers of this message. They also possess qualities of continuity—steadfastness upon the message, continuity of faith, and continuity of wisdom. To this day, Yemenis continue to carry faith and wisdom and to convey the divine message to the world. The current reality of Yemenis testifies to the truth of the Prophet’s words.
He added that just as their ancestors entered the religion of Allah in multitudes on the Friday of Rajab, their descendants today make this occasion an opportunity to return to the Qur’an and adhere firmly to the Messenger of Allah. Each year, they renew their determination and vitality to rise to the level of events and challenges. With every Friday of Rajab, Yemenis grow in stature as challenges and events grow.
As for the aggressive forces, Al-Aboud stressed that on this occasion, they should despair of achieving any breach in Yemeni awareness, whether through media, propaganda, or soft warfare. Faith is deeply rooted within Yemenis, and falsehood and misguidance cannot deceive them. Military aggression, he said, has proven incapable of subduing the Yemeni people; enemies have tried this for years and failed. If they repeat the attempt, Yemenis will make the next confrontation decisive, viewing it as an opportunity to put an end to their adversaries and rid humanity of their harm.
Conclusion
Understanding today’s Yemeni reality cannot be complete without grasping its deep faith-based roots. The Yemen that embraced Islam voluntarily on the Friday of Rajab is the same Yemen that today rises in defense of Gaza, burns with indignation for the dignity of the Holy Qur’an, and confronts arrogance with rare steadfastness. This is an identity forged through faith and awareness, passed down through generations as a responsibility and a mission.
Thus, Yemen once again proves that when faith takes root, it translates into powerful stances against tyranny, and that “faith is Yemeni” is a living truth—renewed today through awareness, action, struggle, and sacrifices that forge an equation of steadfastness in an age of oppression.
