Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, expressed on Thursday his country’s hope that the United States would act wisely toward Iran, stressing that any military decisions would be unacceptable and dangerous.
Speaking to Russian journalists, according to Russia’s Sputnik news agency, Nebenzya said: “We hope that the United States and its allies will demonstrate wisdom and act in a more constructive manner. Any military decisions are unacceptable, pose dangers, and could have regional repercussions.”
He added that the only viable way to resolve differences over the Iranian file, including Iran’s nuclear program, lies in “a political and diplomatic settlement based on equality, mutual respect, and in accordance with international law.”
Nebenzya explained: “We call on all parties to follow this approach, and we are ready to provide all necessary support to promote dialogue.”
On Venezuela, the Russian permanent representative to the United Nations announced on Thursday that Russia will continue to support Venezuela and strengthen all areas of strategic partnership with it.
Nebenzya said: “We fully support the efforts of Venezuela’s official authorities to protect national sovereignty and national interests. We will continue to provide the necessary support to our friend Venezuela, and we intend to strengthen all areas of our strategic partnership.”
He noted that in the first hours following “the treacherous attack by the United States,” Russia condemned “the act of aggression and the kidnapping of the country’s legitimate president under a flimsy pretext.”
Nebenzya added that Russia remained in close contact with Caracas and Venezuela’s authorized president, Delcy Rodríguez, throughout these events.
He stated: “Despite the ongoing threats from abroad, the Bolivarian government has done an impressive job in stabilizing the situation and creating the necessary conditions to continue Venezuela’s peaceful, stable, and independent development.”
Regarding Cuba, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations also announced on Thursday that Russia will continue to support Cuba as it faces a blockade imposed by the United States.
Nebenzya said: “Russia will continue to support our allies in Cuba by all means, relying on the long-standing close relations between our two countries. We are determined to continuously develop bilateral cooperation for the benefit of our peoples and to strengthen international security and stability.”
He noted that the Cuban people and government are united in defending the country’s sovereignty against what he described as “constant pressure” from the United States, expressing confidence that the new package of unilateral sanctions will not break the spirit of the “Island of Freedom.”
He added: “Nevertheless, there is no doubt that these measures affect the living standards of Cuban citizens, and that depriving Cuba of energy supplies carries the most serious risks for the country’s economic situation. We strongly condemn the illegal steps taken against Havana.”
