Israel continues to systematically destroy and obstruct the education system in the Gaza Strip, 28 months after the start of its military assault, according to a statement by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.
The organization said Israeli policies, including the ongoing blockade, destruction of schools and universities, and restrictions on reconstruction materials, have prevented the restoration of education for hundreds of thousands of students.
Euro-Med Monitor reported that more than 780,000 students have been deprived of regular education for three consecutive academic years, while most remaining learning takes place in damaged buildings, tents, or temporary community initiatives lacking basic safety and educational standards.
The group documented the killing of 18,911 school pupils and 1,362 university students, as well as 794 teachers and 246 university faculty members, during the ongoing assault. Israeli attacks have also bombed 668 school buildings, completely destroyed 179 schools, and damaged most of the remaining educational facilities across Gaza.
According to Euro-Med Monitor, 95 percent of Gaza’s schools have been damaged, with more than 90 percent requiring reconstruction or major rehabilitation, leaving the vast majority unusable.
The organization described the pattern as “scholasticide,” the systematic destruction of the education system as part of Israel’s broader assault on Palestinian society. It warned that the ongoing disruption threatens an entire generation of Palestinian children by depriving them of education, stability, and future opportunities.
Euro-Med Monitor called on the international community to pressure Israel to halt attacks on educational facilities, lift restrictions on reconstruction materials and educational supplies, and support urgent plans to restore schooling and rebuild Gaza’s education infrastructure.
