At least 66 people were killed when a military aircraft crashed on Monday in southwestern Colombia while carrying 125 people, authorities announced, adding that dozens were also injured.

A Hercules C-130 aircraft went down shortly after taking off from Puerto Leguízamo in Putumayo province, near the southern border with Ecuador. The aircraft was carrying 125 people at the time, and authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the incident.

According to an updated toll from a military source, the victims include 58 soldiers, six members of the air force, and two police officers.

Carlos Claros, an official in the Puerto Leguízamo local government, told RCN television: “We are doing everything we can” to evacuate the wounded soldiers, adding, “We have treated 81 injured people.”

Earlier, Colombian Air Force Commander General Carlos Fernando Silva had stated that 114 soldiers were on board the aircraft, along with 11 crew members.

Putumayo Governor John Gabriel Molina said in a video posted on Facebook that there were “difficulties in evacuating the victims” from the small airport.

Images captured by Agence France-Presse showed the wreckage of the aircraft engulfed in flames, surrounded by thick black smoke.
