Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) announced today the death of Anbar Operations Commander Saad Duwai al-Baiji, along with several of his companions, as a result of a treacherous American airstrike that targeted the command headquarters while they were carrying out their national duty.
The PMF added that “this heinous crime represents a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and a dangerous disregard for the blood of its sons, once again revealing the aggressive approach that pays no regard to international laws or humanitarian norms.” It called on political forces to confront the repeated American violations and to take clear and firm positions to put an end to such actions.
In a separate statement, the PMF reported that two fighters from Brigade 47 were injured following a strike that targeted the Al-Jazira Operations Command in the Jurf al-Nasr–Al-Saeedat area.
The statement said that “the Al-Jazira Operations Command of the Popular Mobilization Forces in the Jurf al-Nasr/Al-Saeedat area was subjected at 12:20 to a treacherous American-Israeli act of aggression through an airstrike targeting its positions, resulting in the injury of two fighters from Brigade 47, with no other significant losses reported.”
For his part, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani renewed his condemnation of the U.S. strike targeting PMF forces, warning of the consequences of escalating tensions in the region amid overlapping international and regional interests. He also announced the early termination of the international coalition’s mission, which is now set to officially conclude in September 2026.
In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, al-Sudani said: “The Middle East is going through an extremely dangerous phase, where the likelihood of conflicts expanding into a broader regional war is increasing. Israel is fueling wars, causing tragedies, and violating international law.”
He added that Iraq is following the ongoing escalation with “deep concern,” as it lies at the heart of a region where international and regional interests intersect. He stressed that the Palestinian issue remains the fundamental factor behind instability, and that ignoring or delaying its resolution consistently leads to recurring outbreaks of violence.
Al-Sudani emphasized that Iraq “does not believe in military solutions,” warning that any armed intervention to resolve tensions in the Strait of Hormuz would provoke an Iranian response. He added: “We will not assist in resuming navigation there.” He also noted that Iraqi security forces are working to curb any unlawful violence and have successfully prevented a large number of attacks.
