United Nations peacekeeping forces operating in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced the death of one of their soldiers and the serious injury of another following the explosion of a projectile inside one of their positions near the town of Adshit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon.
In a statement released on Monday via its Telegram platform, UNIFIL said that “a peacekeeper was tragically killed and another seriously injured last night as a result of a projectile explosion at a UNIFIL position near Adshit al-Qusayr.”
The force stressed that “no one should lose their life while serving the cause of peace.”
UNIFIL added that the source of the projectile remains unknown at this stage, noting that an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The peacekeeping mission renewed its call on all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel and property at all times, including refraining from any actions that could endanger peacekeepers.
It further emphasized that deliberate attacks against peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.
The statement concluded by affirming that “there is no military solution, and the violence must stop,” noting that many lives have been lost on both sides during the ongoing conflict.
In a related development, Indonesia on Monday condemned the killing of one of its nationals serving within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), following the explosion of a shell at one of its sites near the town of Adshit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that harm inflicted on United Nations peacekeepers is “unacceptable,” reiterating its condemnation of Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon and calling on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty.
This statement comes amid the expansion of Zionist aggression against Lebanon, which resumed in the early hours of March 2, through intensified bombardment targeting the south, the Bekaa Valley, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and areas within the capital. The escalation has resulted in the deaths of more than 1,100 people and left thousands injured.
