Iran’s Fars News Agency denied late Saturday night into Sunday statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The agency quoted sources as saying that “contrary to the claims published by Donald Trump concerning the return of the Strait of Hormuz to its previous status and preparations for signing an agreement, these claims are far from reality.”

According to the report, “based on the latest exchanged draft, if a potential agreement is reached, the Strait of Hormuz will remain under Iranian administration.”

The agency further stated that although Iran had agreed to allow the return of a number of transiting vessels to pre-war levels, this “does not in any way mean ‘free passage’ according to the pre-war situation.”

It added that the management of the strait, including determining routes, timing, methods of passage, and issuing permits, would remain exclusively under the authority and administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In a related context, the agency said that Trump had previously declared that negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program constituted one of the key conditions for any agreement. However, it asserted that Iran had made no commitments regarding the issue and that the nuclear file had not been raised for discussion at this stage.
