The Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, praised on Monday the newly announced memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States of America.
Berri commended the efforts and endeavors exerted by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the State of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt to reach this understanding. He noted that the terms included in the agreement lay the foundation for establishing security and stability in the region, including Lebanon.
Furthermore, Berri expressed his thanks and appreciation to Iran and the United States, as well as their respective leaderships, for their adherence and insistence on including an essential and binding clause in the agreed-upon memorandum to halt the Israeli aggression on Lebanon—all of Lebanon. He emphasized that this preserves Lebanon's sovereignty over its entire territory, aligns with the independence and freedom of its national and sovereign decision-making, and avoids the trap laid by the Israeli political echelon led by head of the Israeli government, Benjamin Netanyahu.
For his part, the head of the People's Movement (Harakat al-Shaab) and former Lebanese MP, Najah Wakim, stated that the signing of the agreement between Iran and the United States means that the American-Israeli war on Iran and the resistance in Lebanon has failed.
In a post on the "X" platform, Wakim described the allies of the United States in Lebanon and the Gulf as "wretched," pointing out that they "have been kicked off the field and are no longer even accepted in the spectator stands." Wakim added, saying: "Joseph Aoun and Nawaf Salam do not represent the Lebanese people."
In a parallel development, the "Free Patriotic Movement"welcomed the announcement of the cessation of military operations between the United States and Iran, valuing the efforts of the mediating nations. The Movement considered this agreement a real opportunity to transition the region toward political solutions. For Lebanon, it represents an entry point toward a permanent ceasefire, an end to the Israeli occupation, reconstruction, and the investment of its national resources.
The statement from the Movement added that the ongoing shifts require the Lebanese state to act responsibly to secure its national rights, extend its legitimate authority, and restrict weaponry to the army. This would ensure that Lebanon, through its constitutional institutions, serves as the sole negotiator, detached from regional axis conflicts.
The Movement also called on political forces to read these developments responsibly and move past external dependencies. It urged the international community and Arab states to support Lebanon economically following the implementation of reforms, stressing that this moment is not for one party to claim victory over another, but rather a historic opportunity to elevate national partnership.
In the early hours of Monday morning, the Supreme National Security Council of Iran confirmed that Tehran succeeded in finalizing the text of the memorandum of understanding for the end-of-war negotiations (the Islamabad Talks) between Iran and the United States, following months of arduous and intensive rounds of negotiations. This followed an announcement by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who declared that a peace agreement had been reached between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran after intensive negotiations.
