US President Donald Trump said Iran had shown resilience despite months of war, while offering little detail on how he plans to revive a memorandum of understanding with Tehran that was intended to bring an end to their three-and-a-half-month war.

Asked during a cabinet meeting how he would restore the agreement, Trump said the US goal was simply victory, suggesting there was limited focus on a diplomatic solution or a clear strategy to end the fighting.

“We just want to win,” Trump told reporters.

“We’re trying to be as nice as you can be in a situation like that,” he said, before repeating his position that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons.

“They cannot have a nuclear weapon. Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” the US president said.

Asked whether Americans should expect continued exchanges of strikes between Washington and Tehran, Trump replied, “A little bit.”

“It would be foolish to say no. You always have to keep your guard up.”
