Cuba’s national electric utility announced a nationwide power outage overnight Sunday into Monday, occurring against the backdrop of a suffocating U.S. oil embargo.

The state-run electric company, Unión Eléctrica, reported a "total collapse" of the national grid on social media, plunging the entire island into darkness, including the capital, Havana.

Cuba has been grappling for the past five years with its worst economic crisis in decades, exacerbated by an oil blockade imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump in January.

Blackouts have surged in frequency and severity since the implementation of the fuel embargo, which has severely disrupted fuel supplies to power plants and backup generators—facilities that predominantly rely on imported diesel.

The latest system failure follows a major power outage that struck western Cuba on Saturday evening, where electricity was only restored on Sunday morning after engineers repaired a series of widespread grid failures.
