The Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to International Organizations in Vienna has affirmed that the expansion of the United States' nuclear arsenal constitutes a threat to all of humanity.
In a message marking the anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki disaster in Japan, the Iranian Mission stated: "The painful legacy of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is a bitter and tragic reminder of the profound human suffering caused by these terrifying weapons."
The mission added: "The human losses and massive destruction, as well as the lethal radiation that harmed even generations yet unborn at that time, clearly prove that the only absolute guarantee to prevent the recurrence of such a catastrophic tragedy is the complete destruction of all nuclear weapons, before they destroy us all."
The Iranian Mission continued in its message: "However, the United States—the only country to have used nuclear weapons to date, and itself one of the depositary states of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)—continues, after 56 years of non-compliance with its nuclear disarmament obligations under the treaty, to expand and modernize its nuclear arsenal, leaving all of humanity under the shadow of a constant threat."
