Water pumping system at well 19 in Mawasi Khan Yunis area, south of the Gaza Strip, stopped after its operating generator broke down, leading to a water outage for 27 camps comprising about 6,000 families, nearly 30,000 people.
Rafah Municipality announced, on Saturday, the generator breakdown alongside the non-availability of spare parts needed for its repair, preventing setting a date for resuming water pumping.
The municipality appealed to relief and international institutions and humanitarian organizations for urgent intervention to provide spare parts, energy and fuel needed to re-operate the water system.
It clarified that the crisis falls under ongoing challenges facing the water sector in displacement areas, pointing out the presence of 16 wells technically ready for operation, but stopped due to absence of energy sources.
Municipal data indicated that the 16 wells are capable of providing water to nearly 170,000 people, but operating them requires providing four electric generators and energy sources ensuring their regular operation.
