Russian air defense systems intercepted 791 Ukrainian drones overnight, Russia's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday, marking another massive wave of aerial attacks as Kiev steps up long-range strikes deep inside Russian territory.

"Over the past night, air defense forces on duty intercepted and destroyed 791 Ukrainian aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles", the ministry said.

The latest operation comes only days after Russia reported one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks since the beginning of the war. Moscow said its air defenses destroyed 822 Ukrainian UAVs during the night of August 15-16, with drones detected across numerous Russian regions and around the capital.

The previous attack struck several locations inside Russia, including the Moscow region, where a major Wildberries distribution facility caught fire. Russian authorities reported casualties in Moscow and Rostov regions. Kiev has said facilities used for Russian military logistics and production form part of its long-range targeting campaign.

Ukrainian forces have also recently targeted military-industrial infrastructure farther from the front, including the Kamensky Combine in Russia's Rostov region, which Kiev says is involved in the production of rocket fuel.

Drone war intensifies

The growing scale of the attacks reflects an increasing reliance on mass drone operations as fighting along much of the roughly 1,250-kilometer front remains largely stagnant.

Ukraine has expanded domestic drone production and increasingly employed long-range UAVs to strike Russian energy, logistics and military-industrial sites hundreds of kilometers from the battlefield.

Russia has simultaneously intensified its own long-range strikes on Ukrainian military, industrial and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian state energy company Naftogaz said its facilities had been attacked 13 times over the past week, amid an expanding exchange of drones and missiles between the two sides.

The figures announced by the Russian Defense Ministry concerning the number of Ukrainian drones intercepted overnight could not be independently verified.
