Democrats in the US House of Representatives are preparing legislation to challenge President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” seeking to restore the lake’s longstanding name, Axios reported.
Democratic Representative Tim Kennedy, co-chair of the bipartisan Northern Border Caucus, is preparing a bill to reverse Trump’s executive order, while Representative Debbie Dingell has also said she plans to introduce legislation opposing the change.
Trump signed the order on Thursday amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa, prompting a firm rejection from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said Canada would continue referring to the lake as Lake Ontario regardless of the US decision.
Lake Ontario is part of the Great Lakes system shared by the United States and Canada, with its shores extending along New York state and the Canadian province of Ontario. The Democratic effort could now bring the renaming into a broader political dispute in Washington, as lawmakers seek to prevent the new designation from being adopted across the US government.
