US congressional candidate and far-right activist Jake Lang reportedly tore pages from a copy of the Quran inside a church in New York, in a deliberate act of provocation against Muslims.
The incident, which reportedly took place two days ago, sparked condemnation from Muslim organizations and religious groups.
Lang entered the church, tore pages from the Quran and directed anti-Islamic remarks at Muslims, including calls for them to “get out of our city.”
Lang is known for his involvement in far-right circles and was among those who participated in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. He was later granted a presidential pardon in January 2025.
US Muslim activists condemned the incident as a deliberate act of provocation, rejecting attempts to justify the desecration of religious symbols under the banner of freedom of expression.
They also warned against using places of worship to promote Islamophobia and white supremacist rhetoric, calling for accountability and measures to prevent similar incidents.
Repeated acts of burning, tearing and desecrating the Holy Quran in Western countries have fueled widespread anger across the Muslim world, with many viewing the incidents as deliberate attacks on Islamic sanctities rather than isolated acts of provocation.
The recurring desecration has intensified calls for international action to protect religious sanctities, curb anti-Islamic hatred and hold those responsible accountable.
