Cuba suffered its seventh major blackout of the year on Friday, as persistent fuel shortages and the US blockade place mounting pressure on the island’s electricity system.

The Energy Ministry confirmed the nationwide grid failure in a statement on X, saying: "A total disconnection of the electrical system has occurred."

Authorities did not immediately identify the cause of the September 18 collapse or announce when electricity would be restored.

US pressure deepens fuel crisis

The outage comes as Cuba struggles to sustain electricity generation amid deteriorating infrastructure and restrictions on access to imported fuel.

Washington has intensified pressure on the island’s energy supplies this year, threatening tariffs against countries supplying it with oil. The loss of Venezuelan deliveries and pressure on other suppliers, including Mexico, have compounded the shortages.

In May, Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy said Cuba had exhausted its diesel and fuel-oil reserves, highlighting the severity of the supply crisis.
