Yemeni Parliament Speaker Yahya Ali Al-Ra’i sent a letter to the UN Security Council and the United Nations, urging them to abandon biased positions favoring the Saudi-led coalition and to examine the facts on the ground.
Al-Ra’i condemned the Security Council’s latest statement, affirming that it is siding with the aggressor and criticizing double standards in addressing the aggression.
He said the recent escalation was part of a wider pattern of attacks since March 2015, stressing that Saudi forces had targeted infrastructure, economic and service facilities, markets, roads, bridges, schools, mosques, homes and other civilian sites.
Al-Ra’i also said that Saudi Arabia is escalating militarily despite previous de-escalation commitments, including strikes on Sana’a International Airport and attacks on roads, bridges and civilian facilities.
He called on the UN and Security Council to assume their legal, moral and humanitarian responsibilities toward Yemen and stressed Yemen’s right to independence, sovereignty and freedom from foreign tutelage.
He held the Saudi government responsible for the consequences of its military intervention and blockade and urged the UN to review evidence documenting the impact of the crimes in Yemen.
The statement comes after the UN Security Council issued a September 18 statement condemning Yemeni attacks on Saudi Arabia. The statement did not similarly address the Saudi airstrikes Yemen has reported during the latest escalation, prompting officials in Sana’a to affirm that the Council is applying double standards and siding with Saudi Arabia.
