A breach at the U.S. Department of War (Pentagon) has exposed sensitive data belonging to nearly 3 million individuals, according to a report by ABC News.
Quoting a U.S. official, the news network stated that the compromise affected 2.76 million living individuals and another 294,000 deceased persons.
The official noted that an information system belonging to the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) was breached during the period between October 2025 and July 2026.
ABC News reported that the data pertains to a broad cross-section of military personnel, including Social Security numbers and details regarding their employment.
The nature of the compromised information may raise national security concerns, particularly as it includes details about job duties for military and civilian personnel, according to ABC News.
It is worth noting that the DMDC serves as one of the primary repositories for personnel records at the Pentagon, holding more than 60 million records.
The center maintains information on active-duty and reserve service members, civilian employees, contractors, retirees, veterans, and military family members.
