Nearly 50,000 women and girls have been killed or severely injured by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 2023, equivalent to one in every 21 women and girls in the enclave, UN Women said Friday.

“More than 38,000 killed and 11,700 left with injuries so severe that they now live with lifelong disabilities,” Sofia Calltorp, UN Women’s chief of humanitarian action, told reporters in Geneva.

While most of the casualties recorded took place during the first two years of the war, women and girls continue to be targeted despite a ceasefire agreement entering into effect in October 2025, she said.

277 women and girls are among those who have been killed in Gaza over the past year, according to the UN official.

“Behind every number is a life: a woman with hopes and ambitions, a mother caring for her children, a daughter, a spouse and friend, a woman contributing to her family and community,” Calltorp said.
