The Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms strongly condemned the double standards in the positions of the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, who has issued no statement condemning the hundreds of crimes committed by Saudi Arabia in Yemen, which claimed the lives of thousands of martyrs, most of them women and children, and resulted in the destruction of hundreds of civilian facilities. This stands in contrast to the mobilization of positions and the issuance of statements of condemnation, denunciation, and solidarity with the Saudi regime as soon as Yemen began to respond.
In a statement, the organization denounced this approach, which raises serious questions about the true role played by the UN envoy and the extent of his commitment to the neutrality expected of international mediation.
The organization affirmed its rejection of political gain at the expense of the blood and suffering of the Yemeni people, through condemning the party subjected to aggression and expressing solidarity with the party that committed crimes against civilians and their property. It described this as blatant double standards that distort the facts, disregard the rights of victims, and trample on the principles of justice and fairness.
The statement pointed out that the silence over hundreds of crimes committed by Saudi Arabia in Yemen, and the thousands of victims and widespread destruction they have left behind, contrasted with the swift condemnation of Yemen’s defense of itself, reveals an unacceptable selectivity in dealing with events and raises serious questions about the credibility of the UN envoy and the United Nations.
“International mediation must not be turned into a platform for expressing solidarity with one party while overlooking its crimes, or into a tool for exerting political pressure on the party subjected to aggression, while marginalizing the suffering of its victims and disregarding their rights,” the statement said.
The Insan Organization held the UN envoy and the United Nations responsible for the consequences of these double standards on confidence in international mediation efforts. It affirmed that neutrality does not mean remaining silent about the crimes of one party while selectively condemning the other, but rather applying the same standard to all parties and addressing violations in accordance with international law, without discrimination or political calculations.
The organization expressed its indignation at the exploitation of the suffering and blood of Yemenis for political calculations at the expense of victims’ rights and dignity. It called on the UN envoy to move beyond selective silence, adopt clear positions on Saudi crimes committed against the Yemeni people, and cease taking positions that reinforce the perception of bias toward the Saudi regime and undermine confidence in his role as an international mediator.
The statement affirmed that the blood of Yemenis is not a bargaining chip and their suffering is not a means of political gain. Condemning the party subjected to aggression while expressing solidarity with the aggressor will not bring peace; rather, it will deepen mistrust and undermine the prospects for reaching a just settlement.
The Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms stated that international silence does not erase crimes, does not extinguish the rights of victims, and does not absolve the international community of its legal and moral responsibilities.
