The Wall Street Journa has revealed extensive moves by Saudi airlines to evacuate dozens of aircraft from Riyadh Airport amid Yemeni operations, which are placing pressure on Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector and its flight network.
Citing data from the Flightradar website, the newspaper reported that the number of aircraft at Riyadh Airport fell from 134 to 38 by midday on Wednesday, indicating an expansion in efforts to transfer aircraft to other airports.
The newspaper also reported that Riyadh Air had moved four of the five aircraft that had been parked at Riyadh Airport to other airports, including Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah.
According to the newspaper, an insurance report showed that one aircraft had been declared a total loss and five other aircraft had been damaged at Riyadh Airport, with a combined insured value estimated at approximately $375 million.
The Wall Street Journal noted that the continued closure of Riyadh Airport is intensifying pressure on Saudi airlines and disrupting part of their flight network. It also warned of the possibility of a significant increase in war-risk insurance costs amid attacks targeting airports.
