The Naval Forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that a giant oil tanker in violation of regulations, carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil, was involved in an incident that caused an explosion and a severe fire to break out across parts of the vessel.

The IRGC Navy explained that the incident occurred after the tanker struck a naval mine while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz via an unauthorized route. It noted that the tanker had attempted to pass through the strait after switching off all positioning and radar systems in an effort to deceive, with direct support from the US military, which it described as “engaging in smuggling and terrorism.”

The statement issued by the IRGC Navy affirmed that the Strait of Hormuz is completely closed, stressing that “the consequence for vessels violating Iran’s regulations governing the strait is being burned by the fires of the terrorist US military.”

Several oil tankers have caught fire as a result of violating the designated routes and instructions issued by Tehran.

Iran has imposed a de facto closure on normal navigation through the Strait of Hormuz since the US-Israeli aggression against it began on February 28, 2026. Limited vessel traffic has continued, while Tehran has linked the strait’s reopening to the implementation of its conditions concerning maritime security and compliance with the memorandum of understanding.
