The Tehama Coast Cooperative Fishery Association organized a large protest today, Wednesday, at the Fishing Port in Al Hudaydah city, condemning the horrific massacre committed by the Saudi enemy through targeting fishermen’s boats off the coast of Al-Kadha in Dhubab District, Taiz Governorate, which left eight martyrs and numerous wounded.
Participants in the protest chanted slogans denouncing the heinous crime, affirming that targeting unarmed fishermen while they were striving to secure food for their families reveals the extent of the Saudi enemy’s disregard for civilian lives and its persistence in striking at their sources of livelihood, in criminal conduct that reflects its inability to justify its crimes against the Yemeni people.
The fishermen considered this massacre an extension of the Saudi enemy’s criminal record, which includes hundreds of crimes against Yemeni fishermen, leaving more than 1,090 martyrs and wounded, destroying thousands of fishing boats and fish landing centers along the Yemeni coastline since 2015, and depriving thousands of families of their sources of livelihood.
A statement issued by the protest strongly condemned this treacherous criminal assault, affirming that it constitutes a fully-fledged war crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and all other international conventions that guarantee the protection of civilians, civilian objects, and sources of food and livelihood.
The statement held the Saudi regime fully responsible for this massacre and all other crimes committed against Yemeni fishermen, affirming that these crimes will not be erased by the passage of time. It stressed that the blood of the fishermen will remain a witness to the brutality of the aggression and its disregard for international laws and conventions, and that attempts to evade accountability will not conceal the truth about the crimes committed against the Yemeni people.
The statement denounced the silence of the United Nations, the Security Council, and international human rights organizations in the face of the ongoing crimes against Yemeni fishermen, considering this silence a cover that encourages the Saudi aggression to persist in its crimes and continue targeting fishermen and their sources of livelihood, amid the absence of any serious international action to halt these violations and hold those responsible accountable.
The statement called on international humanitarian and human rights organizations to break their shameful silence and take urgent action to form independent international investigative committees into the crimes targeting Yemeni fishermen, pursue those responsible, and take serious measures to stop the attacks and maritime piracy targeting fishermen in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The fishermen renewed their demand for the protection of workers in the marine fishing sector from the Saudi enemy’s attacks and for an end to the targeting of fishermen, their boats, and fish landing centers, affirming their adherence to their right to practice their profession and secure their families’ livelihoods.
The protest was attended by Murad Tarmoum, Executive Director of the Tehama Coast Association; Abdul Salam Qaeish, Secretary-General of the Association; Abdullah Hanash, the fishermen’s local representative; and workers at the Fishing Port, the Khair Al-Sawahil Foundation, and the Fisheries Authority.
