The US national debt continues to climb, reaching $40.396 trillion on October 19, accumulating an increase estimated at around $400 billion over the past two months, according to data from the US Treasury Department.

The data, analyzed by the RIA Novosti news agency, showed that US debt, which surpassed the $40 trillion mark for the first time on August 19, continued to rise in the following weeks, adding around $250 billion by the beginning of October.

The increase in debt coincided with the US Treasury Department’s announcement on October 16 that the federal budget deficit for fiscal year 2026, which ended on September 30, reached $1.99 trillion, an increase of $217 billion from the previous year and the highest level since 2021.

Government revenues stood at $5.4 trillion, compared with expenditures totaling $7.4 trillion. Debt servicing costs rose by 12% to a record $1.36 trillion, while net interest payments reached $1.052 trillion.

It is worth noting that on October 14, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that economic growth alone would not be sufficient to address the problem of mounting US debt, calling for measures to reduce the budget deficit.

According to estimates reported by RIA Novosti, based on the current pace of debt growth, total US debt could exceed $50 trillion by 2030.

The US Congressional Budget Office also projects that federal debt held by the public will rise to 120% of gross domestic product by 2036, compared with around 101% in 2026, according to its projections released last February.
