Official data released on Wednesday showed that the annual inflation rate in the United Kingdom accelerated more than expected in September, reaching 3.5%, driven by rising energy prices.
The Office for National Statistics said the Consumer Prices Index rose from 3.1% in August to 3.5% in September, a week before the Labour government is set to announce its annual budget, which is expected to address cost-of-living pressures.
Analysts had expected inflation to average 3.4% in September, meaning the actual reading came in above forecasts.
The increase comes amid growing concerns over the purchasing power of British households, as the government prepares to unveil its upcoming fiscal measures.
