Washington Leaders: Stay Away from US Capital Jan. 20

Washington leaders are urging Americans to stay away fro the US capital on Jan. 20, when President-elect Joe Biden is set to be sworn into office amid reports armed protests being planned by the other party, which disputes the election result.

“If I’m scared of anything it’s for our democracy,” DC Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) said at a Monday news conference, responding to a reporter who asked if she feared what might happen on inauguration day, The Washington Post reported. “Because we have factions in our country . . . that are armed and dangerous.”

Up to 15,000 national guards could be deployed during the presidential inauguration, senior defense officials said Monday.

“Trumpism won’t die on January 20,” said Bowser. “Our goals right now are to encourage Americans to participate virtually and to protect the District of Columbia from a repeat of the violent insurrection experienced at the Capitol and its grounds on January 6.”

An additional 2,908 law enforcement personnel have been dispatched to join the city’s full police force of 3,700 officers.

“Today, President Donald J. Trump declared that an emergency exists in the District of Columbia and ordered Federal assistance to supplement the District’s response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from the 59th Presidential Inauguration from January 11 to January 24, 2021,” the statement read.

Bowser is also asking the Trump administration to cancel public gathering permits between January 10 and 24.

The lame-duck has toned down his rhetoric since the deadly breach of the US Capitol by his supporters Wednesday, a move that is apparently leading to a second impeachment effort in US Congress.
