Moscow: Washington seeks to turn the chemical ban organization into a tool for its interests

The Russian Deputy Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Poliansky, stated that the United States and its allies seek to transform the OPCW into a tool to achieve their interests.

“Every day, assurances multiply of the efforts of the United States and its European and Atlantic allies to transform the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, a specialized international technical body, into a tool for achieving their geopolitical interests,” Poliansky said during a session of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.

The Russian diplomat indicated that such positions by Western countries were particularly clear during the investigations into possible incidents of the use of chemical weapons in Syria, when Damascus was held fully responsible in the absence of sufficient evidence.

He stressed that in the context of combating the spread of chemical weapons, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons should pay attention to the United States itself, saying that “it would be logical for the organization to submit a report on the progress in destroying the chemical arsenal of the United States, which is not yet finished.”

On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly discussed a draft resolution on cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in investigating the potential use of chemical weapons in Syria. Russia described the document as “very lopsided and politicized.”
