Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes Hawaii
An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale has hit the southeast coast of Hawaii island , as lava erupted from a crater on Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano.
The US Geological Survey said the quake struck on the Kau Coast at 9:27 p.m. local time at a depth of about 20 miles.
The epicenter was 7.5 miles southeast of Pahala and 47 miles south-southwest of Hilo.
“No tsunami is expected, though some areas may have experienced shaking,” officials said.
The earthquake came after the eruption of the Kilauea volcano, from which lava has continued to flow for the past 48 hours.
The earthquake did not impact volcanic activity at Kilauea or Mauna Loa, The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory confirmed.
