Urgent Call for Action on Safer Oil Tanker Replacement Plan

The Minister of Transport in the National Salvation Government, Abdelwahab Yahya Al-Durrah, emphasized the necessity of the United Nations’ commitment to the Safer oil tanker replacement plan and the importance of avoiding any delays in its implementation. He also stressed the need to fulfill all aspects of the plan, including permanent maintenance.

Recently, UN officials revealed that the United Nations still requires additional financial support to initiate the plan for transferring the Safer oil tanker’s cargo to a substitute vessel, as agreed upon.

During a meeting on Thursday with the representative of the World Food Program in Yemen and representatives from the Groundberg office, Minister Al-Durrah reiterated the importance of adhering to the agreed-upon Safer plan without delay.

Al-Durrah emphasized that the plan must include the implementation of a permanent maintenance program for the substitute vessel to prevent a recurrence of the problem.

The arrival of the substitute vessel for the Safer oil tanker comes after years of stalling and procrastination by the aggressor coalition and the United Nations. This is despite continuous warnings about the risks of a leak from the tanker’s cargo, which is estimated to contain approximately one million barrels of crude oil. The tanker has turned into a ticking time bomb after the aggressor countries prevented its maintenance and attempted to use it as a bargaining card against Sana’a.
