US Reaffirms Opposition to Fair Peace Process in Yemen
The United States has recently reiterated its opposition to a just peace process in Yemen, insisting on imposing its own perceptions on the negotiation process. This is evident in its attempts to present mercenaries as a main party and impose the United Nations as the sole mediator. This stance clearly reflects a desire to obstruct fair solutions, with the aim of keeping the field open for continued aggression, blockade, and targeting of the Yemeni people.
In a statement published on its website, the US Department of State expressed support for what it described as ‘reactivating the Yemeni political process under the auspices of the United Nations’. This is seen as a clear attempt to mislead public opinion about the resumption of direct negotiations between Sana’a and Riyadh, which are sponsored by Omani mediation.
The US Department of State blatantly tried to attribute the successes of Omani mediation to the United States. It claimed that the visit of the national delegation and mediators to Riyadh was a result of actions by American officials and their visits to the region. This is seen as an exposed attempt to present Washington as a peace mediator in Yemen.
The statement from the US Department of State also clearly attempts to jump from humanitarian issues to political issues. It confirmed that Washington is looking forward to “a ceasefire, conducting Yemeni-Yemeni talks, then solving the humanitarian crisis”. This is seen as a clear indication of the White House’s insistence on manipulating peace priorities and subjecting urgent humanitarian entitlements to American political perceptions.
The White House National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, claimed in a statement that the visit of the national delegation to Riyadh comes within what he called “the initiative led by Saudi Arabia”. This is seen as an attempt by Riyadh to present itself as a mediator between Yemeni parties.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed in a statement that it had invited the national delegation to visit the Kingdom “to discuss the Saudi initiative presented in 2021; with the aim of reaching peace between Yemeni parties”. This clearly translates into a continued commitment by the Saudi regime to the American position.
These new official Saudi and American statements remind us of previous stages where Riyadh and Washington tried to use “peace” as an advertising title; to mislead public opinion and cover up the reality of continued aggression and blockade. These statements clearly express a main focus on highlighting aggression countries as mediators and peace sponsors, portraying Sana’a’s response to mediators’ efforts as if it were a response to aggression countries’ requests, and turning the suffering of Yemeni people into an internal problem.
This negative stance towards the resumption of the negotiation process is a concerning indicator, raising questions about the Saudi regime’s genuine willingness to ensure the success of mediation efforts and seize the current negotiation opportunity, which is likely to be the last. Official statements from both Washington and Riyadh suggest a persistent American-Saudi strategy of evasion, leaving the door open for continued aggression against the Yemeni people under misleading pretexts and behind local facades.
