Voters’ strong disapproval of US President Joe Biden’s job performance has reached 47 percent, the highest negative poll number ever during his presidency according to a poll released Saturday.
Siena College poll, commissioned by the New York Times, showed that Biden currently trails likely Republican nominee Donald Trump by 43% to 48% among registered voters nationally.
The poll found that just one in four voters (24%) believe the country is moving in the right direction — a key question in the run-up to the election — and more than twice as many voters said Biden’s policies have hurt them personally.
Of the two-thirds of US residents who feel the country is headed in the wrong direction, the poll found, 63% said they would vote for Trump.
These results, conducted at the end of February, come as Biden’s re-election campaign attempts to change the narrative regarding voters’ concerns about the Democratic nominee’s age, mental ability, and handling of foreign policy and the economy.
The poll showed that the majority of voters believe that the economy is in bad shape. This poll is the latest to reveal the depth of voter dissatisfaction with the US President.
Last week, a poll conducted by Bloomberg News showed that Biden is trailing Trump in several crucial states, including Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, and Wisconsin.
In the “Bloomberg” poll, a large percentage of respondents expressed their concerns about Biden’s age, and a large percentage said that Trump is dangerous, and they indicated that the number of “double haters,” as opinion polls call voters who do not agree with any of the candidates, is large.
These results were widely repeated in the poll, with Biden’s approval rating reaching 38%, while Trump’s performance was better with 44% approval. 19% of voters said they disapproved of both men, but among them they disliked Biden slightly less, with a 7% difference between Biden (38%) and Trump (45%).
This prevalence, according to the Times, is significant: The candidate least disliked by the “double haters” won the last presidential election.
These results may reinforce what Democratic and Republican pollsters have concluded from the recent primary vote. The poll found that among working-class, non-college-educated voters of color, Biden leads by only a small margin, 47% to Trump’s 41%. Four years ago, Biden had a 50-point lead.
